Flushing Shutters
AS-KIPPE
Flushing shutters (tubs) are among the most efficient and most economical devices for cleaning settled sludge from settlement tanks. Flushing shutters are set in such a way that the tank can always be automatically flushed immediately after its emptying.
Functional description
The shutter that is eccentrically suspended on bearings is filled with pumped water from an internal or external source. The shutter is overturned due to a change of its point of gravity just before its filling. The water stream then produces a strong wave whose flushing power is used to clean the tank and wash out the sediments to the drain pit.
Structural design
All parts of the flushing shutter (tub, pivots, consoles, and lubricators), except the bearings and stops, are made of stainless steel 17,240.
Characteristics and advantages
• Flushing is the most economical method of removing deposits
• The flushing shutter is a simple and reliable device
• Strong flushing dynamics
• Balanced, fine, and silent movement
• Flushing length up to 60 m
• Max. width of one section is 6 m
• Lightweight stainless steel structure without any maintenance requirements

Identification
AS - KIPPE/ xxx/ yyyy/ Z
xxx .... Required volume in l/lm (300 – 1,500 l/bm)
yyyy ... Width of one section in mm (max. 6,000 mm)
Z ........ Operation type
- M … Manual filling of the shutter
- A … Automatic filling of the shutter
Operation automation
The standard delivery contains the flushing shutter, including complete anchorage (M). For the automation of the flushing process, the standard delivery can be supplemented with the automatic filling of the shutter, setting the number of flushing cycles, an acoustic alarm before the overturning, the remote transmission of information to the control centre, etc. The level of automation depends on the customer’s requirements.
Shutter type selection
The selection is based on the required storage volume. This volume is used to determine the dimensions and type of the device. The calculation should consider the storage height (min. 2 m) and the width of one section (max. 6 m); the length of the tank is then selected accordingly. The length of the tank then determines the selection of the suitable equipment type, i.e., the volume of the flushing shutter per 1 linear metre (lm).
Example: You need to store the volume V 2,200 m3. Select the width B 12 m, i.e., considering the depth Hv 4 m, the length of the tank L is approx. 45 m. The required volume of the tub, 1,000 l/lm then corresponds to the length of the route. Thus you should select 2x the AS-KIPPE 1,000/ 6,000/ M type
Requirements for the construction part
The tub is suspended on bearings seated on brackets that are attached to the tank walls. The consoles are anchored to the walls with stainless-steel anchors. The inner distance of the walls is generally 6 mm; equipment with a different width can be delivered on request. The front wall of the tank is rounded such that the stream can be directed without a loss of dynamics and the gradient of the bottom is at least 2%. The sump volume at the end of the tank should be at least 1.25 times the shutter volume. The tanks can me designed as closed or open. With open tanks, it is necessary to solve the possibility of winter operation.
