Earthwork and road construction products

Ruukki’s earthworks and road construction products consist of granulated blast furnace slag and crushed aggregates.

While the load-bearing capacity of structures increases over time as a result of binding, other technical properties remain unchanged.

Structures made using these products have a number of advantages compared to those made in the traditional way:

• Speed of construction 
• Less transport of materials
• Structures are thinner than normal

Additionally, these products have better insulating and load-bearing properties than natural materials.

Environmental benefits including cost and energy savings 

The use of Ruukki’s blast furnace slag products in construction also has environmental advantages because the use of recycled products saves natural resources. In addition to cost savings, they also save energy and protect the atmosphere. At the same time, the environmental impact caused by use of fuels is reduced.

Because structures made using blast furnace slag and aggregates have a longer lifespan, they have also been proved more cost-effective for road maintenance providers and road users.

Quality control starts at the production stage

The main components of liquid slag are analysed several times a day. The quality of finished products is controlled in accordance with legislation and product-specific requirements.

Regular testing

Ruukki’s earthworks and road construction products meet the following requirements:

• Blast furnace slag in earthworks and road construction (CE): EN 13242 Aggregates for unbound and hydraulically bound materials for use in civil engineering work and road construction. 

The environmental characteristics of our mineral products are tested regularly by leaching tests performed in accordance with EN 12457-3. Mineral products have the minimal solubility of heavy metals.
